The Well-Appointed Life Presented by Blue Box Auction and Salcedo Auction, Manila. The Well-Appointed Life is Salcedo Auction's ongoing celebration of gracious living, built as much on beauty and connoisseurship as on history, scholarship, friendship, and the pleasure of living with exceptional things. This edition brings together an unusually rich survey of Philippine art spanning the late nineteenth century to the present day, anchored by four rare works from National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, two from the 1930s and two important pieces from the 1940s. The full catalog is available to browse here on our site. Bidding for the sale takes place directly on Salcedo Auction's website, live on September 12, 2026 at 10:00 AM PHT (September 11 at 10:00 PM ET). The Amorsolo Masterworks At the heart of the sale are two rare 1930s masterworks by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, Fruit Vendor and Under the Mango Tree, alongside two important works from the 1940s, Planting Rice and Tinikling Dance. Together, the four works trace the grace, color, and sunlight that define Amorsolo's vision, and the social and cultural life of the Philippines across Peace Time and the early postwar years. Planting Rice (lot #29) and Tinikling Dance (lot #50) are being offered for the very first time, consigned through Blue Box Auction Gallery. According to family history, the two paintings carry a story of their own. A relative of the consigning family is said to have helped save the life of one of Amorsolo's wives during the Second World War, and at least one of the paintings was later given to the family as a gift of gratitude. Philippine Modernism National Artist Cesar Legaspi's 1948 work embodies the intellectual force of Philippine Neo-Realism, while National Artists Hernando R. Ocampo and BenCab represent two distinct yet equally consequential directions in the development of Philippine modernism. The Figurative Tradition These works are joined by important pieces from Danilo Dalena, Solomon Saprid, and Elmer Borlongan, each offering a distinctive perspective on the Filipino figure, society, and lived experience. Contemporary Voices From these established masters, the sale moves toward the highly individual figurative language of Jose John Santos III, and on to a compelling selection of contemporary practitioners including Leslie de Chavez and Christina "Ling" Quisumbing Ramilo, reflecting the strength, seriousness, and intellectual ambition of contemporary Philippine art. Provenance and Friendship Some of the sale's most meaningful works carry histories inseparable from the friendships and cultural stewardship of the artists themselves. Ocampo's 53-D, from the collection of National Artist Leonor Orosa Goquingco, embodies one such story, with proceeds from its sale contributing to the forthcoming restaging of her masterwork Filipinescas in 2027. Other lots throughout the catalog carry similar traces of longstanding relationships between artists and collectors, a reminder that the history of collecting is also a history of human connection. A Partnership Across Shores Salcedo Auction's commitment to cultural exchange extends beyond the Philippines. This sale marks a collaboration with Blue Box Auction Gallery in Norfolk, Virginia, bringing the two 1940s Amorsolo works before an international audience and reflecting the growing appreciation of Philippine art among collectors abroad. The sale is also supported by Asia Society Philippines as Education and Public Programs Partner, placing these works within a broader conversation about Philippine culture, history, and artistic achievement. We invite you to approach this catalog not simply as a guide to the objects offered, but as an invitation to discover the stories, ideas, and relationships that make collecting such a rewarding pursuit.
