Antique Revolutionary War Plug Bayonet. The plug bayonet is American-made and dates to the Revolutionary War. Many muskets did not have bayonets and because of the design of the knife, it would be inserted into the barrel of the musket to be used in close-up fighting. The knife features a wooden handle that is cracked and has a curved ricasso with an unidentified mark. it measures 14 inches long. The sheath is a much later addition and dates to the Civil War. The sheath tapers towards the chape and ends with a small ball point and measures 11 1/8 inches long. It is believed the knife was used in the Revolutionary War by an earlier member of the Conner family. When the Civil War started the sheath was made for the 18th-century knife and carried off to fight the Union army. The knife was purchased from the Conner (sometimes spelled Konner) family from Augusta County, Va. The Conner family had 3 sons who served in the Confederate army.
